Apocrine sweat glands release sweat into hair follicles. Unlike the more common eccrine sweat glands, these are found only in the armpits, anogenital region, ears and eyelids of humans. Unlike eccrine sweat, apocrine sweat doesn't really contribute to cooling the body. Apocrine sweat contains more chemical compounds than eccrine sweat; these feed bacteria on the skin which produce a detectable odor. Apocrine sweat glands become active at puberty and are most active in times of stress and sexual excitement.
