Answer:

18

Explanation:

Find the mean

17+5+11+1+11= 45/5= 9

Subtract the mean from each number then square the sums

7-9= -2^2= 4

5-9= -4^2= 16

11-9= 2^2= 4

1-9= -8^2= 64

11-9= 2^2= 4

Find the mean of the sums

4+16+4+64+4= 92/5= 18

1) from smaller to higher:
1,5,11,11,17

2) find the mean
1 + 5 + 11 + 11 + 17 = 45
mean = 45/5 = 9

Variance = Σ(x- mean)²/(N-1)
[(1-9)² + (5-9)²+(11-9)² + (11-9)²+ (17-9)² ]'(5-1) = 38

Variance = 38
