She tells us that she was sent to seven different homes between the ages of three and sixteen. This had a definite impact in her feelings of isolation as an adult. Another example is the memoir No Gumption, where the author tells us how his lack of "gumption" pushed him to become a writer and thus a full-fledged adult.
