The Mayflower Compact was signed aboard the Mayflower on November 21, 1620. The most important parts of the compact were those establishing a Civil Body Politic, whose purpose was to pass "just and equal laws...for the general good of the Colony". This was an important stepping stone to the creation of the United States Constitution because it represented the first time settlers of the United States came together and wrote a document creating a government whose purpose was to look out for the general good of the people under it, which was vastly different from the royal governing systems under the rule of the King or Queen from which the settlers had fled. This eventually led to the creation of the U.S. Constitution as a government formed by the people for the people.
