square
the area will be the number of squares

area of square=side^2
where side=how many small squares are on each edge

so
196=area=side^2
square root both sides
14=side
there are 14 small squares along an edge

since its a square, a side = sqrt of area

sqrt(196) = 14

so there would be 14 along 1 edge
