European demand for tobacco saved Virginia from failing. Settlers expanded from the Jamestown area. Labor was required to work the tobacco fields luring people to Virginia with the promise of land. This was developed the headright system for well to do settlers and a growing demand for slave labor tobacco made Virginia economy viable
