Jing-mei is the daughter in the story Two Kinds. In this story, Jing-mei is the daughter of a Chinese immigrant, who has great hopes for the future of the girl. Jing-mei's mother believes she could be a prodigy, and wants her to work hard in order to achieve things.

However, the personality of Jing-mei greatly affects how the mother and the daughter relate. Jing-mei resents the pressure that her mother places on her. She also believes that the fact that her mother pressures her so much makes her unable to enjoy the things she tries. When she is terrible at piano because she did not try, she hopes her mother allows her to stop, instead of pushing her again. The combination of the two personalities leads to a lot of conflict between the two characters.
