Two cars traveled equal distances in different amounts of time. Car A traveled the distance in 4 h, and Car B traveled the distance in 4.5 h. Car B traveled 5 mph slower than Car A. (The formula R⋅T=D , where R is the rate of speed, T is the time, and D is the distance can be used.) How fast did Car B travel? Enter your answer in the box.

Given that car B travelled 5 mph slower than car A, let the rate (R) at which car B travelled be x, then the rate at which car A travelled is given by x + 5.

Given the formular RT = D, then the distance travelled by car A is given by 4(x + 5) and the distance travelled by car B is given by 4.5x.

Given that both cars travel an equal distance, then 4(x + 5) = 4.5x
4x + 20 = 4.5x
4.5x - 4x = 20
0.5x = 20
x = 20 / 0.5 = 40

Therefore, car B travel at 40 mph.
