y = x - 4(x - 1)....when y = 42
42 = x - 4(x - 1)...distribute thru the parenthesis
42 = x - 4x + 4 ...combine like terms on the right side
42 = -3x + 4 ...subtract 4 from both sides
42 - 4 = - 3x
38 = -3x ...divide both sides by -3
-38/3 = x
