A square piece of cheese covers 8 square inches of a plate. What is the approximate length of one side of the piece of cheese? (Approximate to the nearest hundredth inch.)

area of a square - S^2, where S is the length of a side

to find S when you know the area, take the square root

so S = sqrt(8)

S = 2.828

rounded to nearest hundredth = 2.83 inches
