What best defines as indentured servant

Well, an indentured servant is not a slave. A slave stays on a plantation for life until slaves were free in 1863.
An indentured servant works for a certain amount of years to pay off their exchange for transportation. An indentured also gets food and shelter in return.
I think this is my best definition of an indentured servant.
I hope this helps :)
