The Gero Crucifix was built nearby 965–970 with the commission of Gero an Archbishop. It is the oldest sculpture of the crucified Christ in Europe and has been placed in Cologne Cathedral, Germany. It is carved in an oak and gilded in gold. The Gero Cross plays an essential role in the Medieval German art because it was a turning point of the arts in German breaking from the oldest tradition of Carolingian to Byzantine art portraying of Christ in sculpture, in this sculpture suffering of Jesus is shown in form of bent head and twisted body.

The depiction of Gero Crucifix have been taken in coming years to portray Jesus in Churches.
