The temperature in Jonestown and cooperville was the same at 1:00. By 2:00, the temperature in Jonestown dropped 10 degrees, and the temperature in cooperville dropped 6 degrees. By 3:00, the temperature in Jonestown dropped 8 more degrees, and the temperature in cooperville dropped 2 more degrees.

A. Write an equation that models the change to the temperature in Jonestown since 1:00.

B. Write an equation that models the change to the temperature in cooperville since 1:00.

C. Where is it colder at 3:00, Jonestown or cooperville?

If the temperature at 1:00 is x, then Jonestown's temperature at 3:00 is
x-10-8 (since it dropped 10 degrees then 8 more degrees)=x-18

Using x for Cooperville too, we get x-6-2 (since it drops 6 degrees then 2 more degrees) = x-8

Since -8 is greater than -18, Cooperville's temperature is warmer and Jonestown's temperature is lower aka colder

Answer:

a). (x - 18)

b). (y - 8)

c). Jonestown will be cooler.

Explanation:

A. Temperature in Jonestown and Cooperville was same at 1:00

By 2:00 the temperature in Jonestown dropped 10 degrees and by 3:00 dropped by 6 degrees.

Let the temperature at 1:00 was x°

Therefore, expression which represents the temperature drop will be

(x - 18)

B. In Cooperville drop in temperature was 6 degrees at 2:00 and 2 degrees at 3:00.

Let the temperature at 1:00 was y degrees

Therefore, expression which represents the temperature drop will be

(y - 8)

C. At 3:00, drop in temperature at Jonestown was (10 + 8) = 18 degrees and at Cooperville was (6 + 2) = 8 degrees

Therefore, Jonestown will be cooler.
