First, you subtract or add. We do the opposite of what it says, so if it says +4, we subtract 4. I'm going to move the 4 to the right side. Whatever we do to one side, we have to do to the other side.

8x+4=5x-11
-4 -4
----------------
8x=5x-15

We had 2 negative signs so we keep the signs and add, so -11+-4=-15.

Now, after we either add or subtract, we move the variable, in this case to the left side. So we need to subtract.

8x=5x-15
-5x -5x
--------------
3x=-15

Now we either divide or multiply, so since the 3 and the x are not separated by any sign, it means multiply. Then we do the opposite, which is divide.

3x=-15
--- ----
3 3
X=-3

You must get the like terms on the correct sides, so here is how to solve it:

First subtract 5x from both sides: 3x+4=-11
Then subtract 4 from both sides: 3x=-15
Finally divide by 3: x=-5
