In federalist no. 51, what government structure did james madison recommend to ensure "ambition . . . be made to counteract ambition"?

The system of checks and balances was the structure James Madison recommended. That way, the ambition of the leader of part of government would "check' the ambition of the leaders of the other parts, "balancing" the system of government and preventing one branch from overpowering the others, or protecting one branch from being overpowered by the other two.
