In German, bildungs means 'building,' so a translation of a Buildungsroman would literally be - a novel about building (a character).
A good example of a Bildungsroman would be A Picture of Dorian Gray, where we see the protagonist Dorian being developed from an innocent young man to a corrupt evil lunatic.
