His first impression was that they were quite friendly, and could be easily converted to his faith without violence. His next impression was that they were quite ignorant, as they cut themselves on the weapons he gave them. He then thought them ingenious for making javelins to defend themselves when visitors came from a neighboring island to make them into prisoners.
