The government intervention to alleviate poverty are not sustainable when it comes to a long period of time. Government is and has introduced many policies and grants to help those who are less fortunate and it does effect the poverty but that effect is short lived as there are no permanent means for such people to be independent of those aids. Unless someone is able to earn his own bread and sustain his life with jobs and other sources of income, the government help will be just another episode of Christmas happiness which will fade with time.
