The nurse can inform the girl's mother that menstruation is likely to occur in about 2 to 2 ½ years. Breast development begins about 8 to 13 years of age; but generally this begins around age 9 or 10, but can typically happen earlier or later. This is called “breast budding.”  Menstruation occurs about 2 to 2 ½ years after breast development.
