the lines surrounding the first -6 change it to a positive 6. |-6| = 6 and the opposite of 6 is -6. 13 is correct.

It's because | -6 | is an absolute number thats why there are two lines on each side... when an absolute number is a negative it is equal to a positive therefore |-6|=6
