Federal government was given considerable regulatory power on commerce, as well as on interstate commercial maritime routes. Chief Justice John Marshall's interpretation clarified that Congress could regulate matters internal to a state that are fundamentally intertwined with interstate commerce, like the New York monopoly.Congressional power extended to all aspects of the regulation, overriding any state laws contrary to it.
