Why did the US want an isolationist policy DURING World War I?

The US supported an isolationist policy during WW1, because they didn't really know which side to join

The US is a country of immigrants, and there were immigrants from both Central and Ally powers, with immigrants from both sides wanting the US to join their homeland's side.

Which is why they didn't want war.
