What problems arise when the curves of a globe become straight lines on a map

Straight lines distort the objects that are closer to the equator because they are not representative of how they actually are. Objects closer to the equator would bulge out in the real world, and showing that on a two-dimensional map is difficult. Africa is commonly misrepresented as a continent because it is relatively large compared to other continents.
