By observing patters scientists are able to make better conclusions, or judgment calls on the world around us. Whether that be studying the oceans gravitational pull to understand 'high' and 'low' tide. Or studying the planetary orbit around the sun, on how long it takes each planet to make their full lunar cycle. Scientists wouldn't be able to make any sort of answer for these phenomenons without observing them and their patterns.
