This is a simple equation; "x" is the first number and (5+2x) is the second number because it is "5 more than twice the first" and the sum = 80. So... x + (5+2x) = 80 You start by subtracting "x" and moving it to the other side...5 + 2x = 80 - x Then you add the "x" to the other side...5 + 3x = 80 Next, subtract 5 to the other side...3x = 75 Finally, divide the 3 to the other side...x = 75/3...x = 25 25 is the first number so you then multiply it by 2 and add five to get the final answer. 25 + 55 = 80
