Positive × Positive = Positive
3 × 2 = 6
m × n = mn
Positive × Negative = Negative
8 × -4 = -32
m × -n = -mn
Negative × Negative = Positive
-5 × -4 = 20
-m × -n = mn
(-x) × (-x) = x²
The same rules apply for division as multiplication.
