A common theme depicted on Mayan vases was the ruling families and their company with the gods. Mayan king's were thought of as nearly being gods themselves and projected this power by having potters create ceramics decorated with their images, their family's images, and their physical properties to the gods. Some ceramics included glyphs, Mayan word-symbols, which told a story or a song along with the decoration itself.
