What might happen if the delegates were not able to agree with the terms of the great compromise

In the circumstance wherein the delegates and leadership were unable to agree with the terms laid out in the Great Compromise, it very well may have led to a continuation and increasing level of war between the two societies. However, the agreement allowed them to come to a ceasefire for both sides interests.
