In I know why the caged bird sings the speaker states she felt like crying when she heard the lines I am the master of my fate I am the captain of my soul why did she feel like she was keeping her for being in the master of her fate

This is the expression of her feeling that “It was awful to be Negro and have no control over my life.” An irony that she would hear about being the master of her fate during her graduation rites. It was a feeling of refusal to be dictated by the social norms of the time, yet having to be forced to comply.
