Define a variable and write an equation for each situation. Solve each equation to answer the question.

General admission tickets to the fair cost $3.50 per person. Ride passes cost an additional $5.50 per person. Parking cost $6 for the family. The total for the family $51. How many people in the family attended the fair??

P = # of people in the family that attended the fair.

for my Equation I made,
3.50p+5.50p+6=51

but cant figure out how to solve it

(9th Grade ALG 1)
Plz work out the problem, thnx :-)

you have got the right equation, ya

remember, you can do anything to an equation as long as you do to to both sides

now combine like terms

3.50p+5.50p=p(3.50+5.50)=p(9)=9p

so
3.50p+5.50p+6=51
9p+6=51
minus 6 both sides
9p+6-6=51-6
9p+0=45
9p=45
divide both sides by 9
(9p)/9=45/9
(9/9)p=5
1p=5
p=5
