What happens within the respiratory system when someone has hiccups? What can cause hiccups?

When the diaphragm becomes irritated, it yanks down, causing air to rush into the throat.

When this air hits the voice box, it causes a hiccup.

Hiccups can be caused by eating too quickly or too much, an irritated stomach or throat, or feelings of nervousness or excitement.

Hiccups are involuntary spasms of the diaphragm usually occurring when one consumes food or liquid too quickly. When this happens, the diaphragm becomes irritated and involuntarily contracts followed by a rapid closure of the vocal chords.

I hope this helped :)
