Obviously courage would be extremely important for defeating a monster like Grendel. If Beowulf wasn't brave, then he would never have even tried to fight the monster, let alone defeat him. He also needs persistence, and to understand that he cannot kill the monster immediately and on his own. The hero has to be prepared for everything, even dying if it means he will help his people.
