" the difference " means subtract
the difference between 5 and twice a number x is 1
5 - 2x = 1 <== ur equation
-2x = 1 - 5
-2x = - 4
x = -4/-2
x = 2 <== ur solution

2x -5 = 1
2x = 5+1
2x = 6
2x/2 = 6/2
x = 3
