slope of a line that passes through
(x_1,y_1) and
(x_2,y_2) is

(y_1-y_2)/(x_1-x_2)

given the points (-2,8) and (5,2)
the slope between them is
(8-3)/(-2-5)=(5)/(-7)=(-5)/(7)

the slope is
(-5)/(7)

(-2,8)(5,3)

slope = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)
slope = (3 - 8) / (5 - (-2) = - 5/7 <==
