Answer: He becomes convinced of Hyde’s capacity for evil.

Mr. Utterson is a respectable, loyal man who nevertheless can sometimes be acquainted with not so respectable individuals. He used to be acquainted with Jekyll, and is suspicious of Mr. Hyde. As the novel progresses, he becomes convinced of Hyde's capacity for evil, and tries to solve the mystery in order to help his friend. He is the person who ends up discovering the secret in the end.
