From the literary point of view, it is a “first person perspective” in the writing. In this passage, the author wants you to feel how he was feeling during that given situation. Hence, the lines of the texts that says”Every move will be deliberate and meticulous, just like that rescue from sophomore year. I’m close enough to see the relief in the fishermen’s faces. I’ve got this.” Pertaining to himself, and describing his experiences in a detailed manner in order for readers to know what he had experienced in the past.
