What is the relationship between the pharyngitis and subsequent rheumatic fever? With what possible cardiac involvement is Sonya’s physician concerned?

Rheumatic fever may occur following GABHS pharyngitis in children. The most serious complication is rheumatic heart disease ( RHD ). Acute rheumatic fever  ( ARF ) is infection that follows 2-3 weeks after group A streptococcal pharyngitis. Children with serious RHD will need to visit cardiologist for the rest of their lives.
