Given the expression:

\begin{gathered} 2x+10=40 \\ \end{gathered}

to solve for x, first we have to move the terms that dont have an x to the other side of the equation. Each time we do this, the term that we move will be doing its opposite operation! In this case, we have that 10 is adding, therefore, we move it to the other side substracting:

\begin{gathered} 2x+10=40 \\ \Rightarrow2x=40-10=30 \\ 2x=30 \end{gathered}

We can do the same with the 2. Here, the 2 is multiplying the x, then when we move it to the other side, it will be dividing 30 instead:

\begin{gathered} 2x=30 \\ \Rightarrow x=(30)/(2)=15 \\ x=15 \end{gathered}

finally, we have that x=15
