What was the most common initial reason for settlement in north america by the first colonists?

The first North American colony was set up because they wanted to be independent of religious persecution from the Church in Europe. Britain allowed it because it both expanded the British empire and allowed the settlers freedom to practice a religion other than what was being pushed on them in England.
