you can rewrite this as:
3b - 12 + 5b = 44

Then you can add the individual sides:
8b - 12 = 44

Then you can move the 12 over to the other side:
8b = 44 + 12

Sum the sides again:
8b = 56

Then you divide both sides by 8:
b = 7
