Why did Louis XVI call a meeting of the Estates General?

King Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates General to discuss France's tax system. He basically wanted to tax the first and the second estates, which were of clergies, and nobles. He decided to tax them because France was dealing with financial issues, which resulted King Louis XVI going bankrupted.

Hope I helped :D
