Find the length of the segment whose endpoints are (-3,4) and (5,4).

Since the points share the same y coordinate (y=4) it is simply a straight horizontal line ranging from -3 to +5, so the length is 5--3 = 8.

If the y coordinates were different, you would have needed to apply pythagoras.
