Four primary factors which contribute to poverty as a social issue in the community are ignorance, disease, apathy, and dependence. From ignorance to others, as well as to the self, basic provisions and needs will not be met, which in turn, spirals into a system of debt and poverty. Disease can also be a factor, as medical costs rise, one may not have finances to fund treatment, causing debt, and also as a consequence of illness one may not be able to work to support themselves or their families. Apathy, as a result of lack of desire or mental illness or lack of motivation in the community, can seed negativity in the mind to work or attain sufficient financial stability to sustain their needs. Dependence on a system (for example government benefits) or a spouse may create the lack of need for work, once a person loses this support system, they will not have the sufficient skills or practice to achieve financial stability.
