The thick application of paint onto canvas and other surfaces (such as wood) is known as impasto.
This technique refers to the one that painters use when they apply very thick layers of paint onto hard surfaces, such as wood or canvas, but in such a way that the brush strokes are quite obvious. Vincent van Gogh was used this technique often.
