When a number has the |absolute value|, it refers to the amount of units the number is from 0. (you can think of a timeline)
|3| is 3 units away from zero
|-5| is 5. it is NOT -5 units from 0, since a number cannot be -5 units away.
Basically, these lines | x | will make the number positive.
