Hi!

In order for something to be a linear function, it must travel in a straight line. A straight line forms when it has a constant rate of change!

If a function has exponents, that function will not be linear. This is because the exponents don't allow for a constant rate of change in a straight line.

Hopefully, this helps! =)

Yes, f(x) = 16 - 7x is a linear function because there are no exponents and the rate of change (which is the slope) only adds or subtracts a certain number each time.
