Suppose the leftmost digits of two numbers are 8 and 3. Can you tell which numbers is greater. Explain

At first, it might appear that the number with a leftmost digit of 8 should be bigger than one with a left most digit of 3 because so long as the 3 and 8 have the same digit position, this will be the case;
The same applies if the 3 is at a lower digit position than the 8;
But, there is nothing in the statement to suggest that the 8 has the higher digit position, i.e. the numbers could be 3000 and 800;
In this case, the largest number has the leftmost digit of 3;
Therefore, you cannot tell which number will be bigger without any other information.
