Moby middle school's bowling team has 3 bowlers. One member scored 157 and another scored 161. The average score must be at least 165 for the team to win. Write and solve an inequality to show how many points the third bowler must score for a win. Graph the solution. Explain your answer.

We must remember that average is simply the sum of all the scores divided by the number of scores. So:

165 = (157 + 161 + X) / 3

Calculating for the score of the third bowler X:

318 + X = 495

X = 177

Therefore the score of the third bowler must be 177 or greater. Hence:

X ≥ 177
