What is the Declaration of Independence, why is it important, what did it accomplish?

The Declaration of Independence was a document that declared freedom from British Parliament in 1776. The colonists were tired of the harsh treatment by the government of Britain, so they sent in this document, along with a list of grievances, which justified the colonists' decision to break away from Britain.
