Making sure that you prohibit cross contamination. If you use tongs to pick up raw meat, don't use them to pick up something else, as this can transmit food borne illness such as salmonella.

The best way to prevent foodborne illness is to thoroughly cook your food. By the USDA standard, bacteria that is cooked at 165 degrees kills most bacteria and pathogens.
